Meet Ainis: Crafting Log Cabins with Passion, Tradition & Precision

Interview by KM Building Editorial Team

Every log cabin has its own character, a story told through its timber and details. And if there’s one person who knows this intimately, it’s Ainis — our log cabin production manager. A skilled carpenter with years of hands-on experience in both Norway and Sweden, he now brings that rich expertise home to Latvia. We sat down with him to talk about his passion for timber, Nordic inspiration, and what truly makes a house feel like a home.

Every cabin has its own character and charm. What do you enjoy most about bringing these log cabins to life, from the first cut of timber to the final finish?

“I have graduated and trained as a carpenter and have worked with wood all my life. Why wood? I think you can make beautiful and long-lasting things from wood. It’s great to add value to such a powerful and beautiful natural resource.”

Ainis’ appreciation for wood is clear in every word. His pride shines when discussing the hands-on process, the scent of timber and the durability of his craft.

Living and working so closely with nature must leave a strong impression. What elements of the Nordic landscape or lifestyle have inspired you?

“I like that Scandinavians don’t go mushroom picking. We Latvians are crazy about mushroom picking in the fall and will never reveal our best mushroom picking spots to each other. When I work at facilities in Scandinavia, at the end of summer or in the fall, I always go for a short mushroom-picking walk after work — there’s no competition there,” he says, laughing. “Sometimes it’s enough to go around the house to pick mushrooms for dinner.”

That sense of humor and connection to nature is something you feel in his work too — an attention to small, personal details that make every cabin feel like part of its landscape.

You’ve witnessed a shift from traditional, manual craftsmanship to using precise machines. How do you balance the best of both worlds — preserving tradition while embracing innovation?

“Innovations are clearly more economical in terms of material use. Beam connections are more precise and the work can be done with a smaller team. Of course, we have preserved traditions — we still produce round logs in the roof structure according to traditional methods.”

This mix of precision technology and centuries-old craft is one of the reasons KM Building’s cabins stand the test of time.

Finally, what would you say to a family looking to build their dream cabin? What’s one thing you believe truly makes a cabin feel like a home?

“In my opinion, nothing can be cozier than the feeling of warmth that wood creates.”
